Neither Ellsworth, whose lab he worked in, nor the Berkeley Chemistry Department would be pleased if he left early. Their goal consisted of churning out PhDs after years of benefiting from cheap graduate student labor.
The two had been friends for many years, and the banter between caregivers of body and soul was an integral part of their friendship.
We know from experience that switching to our language as soon as possible is a key to assimilation.
“he was lost for the moment. Once he stopped crying, he was fine.” Sistian rubbed his cheek. “I think the beers may have helped there.”
There has even been speculation in medicant circles that crying is God’s gift to help us overcome what might otherwise seem overwhelming.”
Thus began the first, and certainly the only ever, English dictionary to the local language. He wrote down everything he could remember from Carnigan, perhaps twenty nouns in English and how he transcribed the equivalent local word.
Carnigan was the first person Yozef connected with, but, even so, Yozef liked him. He might look menacing, and Yozef could believe it wouldn’t be a person’s smartest move to get on Carnigan’s bad side, but there was more to him. And Yozef had a hunch Carnigan was brighter than he looked, yet with a more common sense of the world smarts than book learning. He was also kinder than others might think.
Was he now smarter, or was his memory enhanced? He suspected memory, since he didn’t feel smarter.
“My people say a wise man knows he doesn’t know, while a fool knows what isn’t true.”
Imagine if suddenly your people only had to work half as much time as they do now. What would they do with the rest of the time?”
the abbot primed in case he wanted to introduce new ideas. Now the questions were, what to introduce and when?
Scholastics anywhere could talk up a storm without saying anything.
“What would you need to make some of this ether, Yozef?” With that simple question, Yozef’s isolation from the world outside the abbey ended.
The only way was to boil liquids that had higher vaporization temperatures. The only available candidate Yozef could dredge out of his memory was olive oil at 300oC.
“There are four coins, two silver and two gold. The small silver is one krun, large silver five kruns, small gold twenty kruns, and large gold hundred kruns.”
Thank you, God, prayed the abbot silently. Once again confirmation of your command we care for our fellows. We cared for the strange man, and, as the Word says, “What you give without hesitation will come back to you many-fold.”
“You’re not dumb, Anarynd, just stupid for letting other people tell you who you can be.”
“So this is not normal … to keep them imprisoned here in Caedellium?” Cadwulf frowned. “Why would we keep them imprisoned? They’d be a burden on the community. They are punished by fines, whippings, or probation or sent away from Caedellium, either as exiles or slaves, depending the severity of their crimes.”
On Earth, there were about 105 male babies for every 100 females.
A mild-mannered man of average appearance, except for unusual light-bluish-gray eyes. An honest man, generous to workers, teller of jokes—and ruthless if crossed.
I’ll be damned. Honest to God forms. God knows how far I am from Earth and still forms!
The answer was a jerk of his head, presumably meaning the field was in that direction. Cadwulf thanked him more than Yozef thought deserving. He had to keep reminding himself that people weren’t so much rude as brusque—a reasonably neutral brusqueness and not the abrasiveness of some New Yorkers or the deliberate, feigned superiority of the French.
Yozef lapsed into a funk. He had thought the relationship with Bronwyn was only physical, but once it ended, emotional ties lingered.
Acceptance of the new lamps benefited from Yozef’s access to standard Earth marketing strategies: free samples, demonstrations, and product placement.
‘It’s good to be greedy, just not too greedy.’”
No one knew it, but the abbot’s reference to Yozef being “an implement of God’s grace” would linger in people’s minds.
