Akbar Allahabadi succinctly summed up the Muslim social hierarchy in the late thirties: Council mein bahut Sayyid; Masjid mein faqat Jumman (The Viceroy’s executive council is full of Sayyids, But the mosques are packed only with the Jumman.)
