Things are silent as he heads out of town. I think about asking where we’re going but then decide it doesn’t matter. As long as I’m with him, I don’t care where we go.

“How can anyone ever mistake you for being anything other than amazing and kind?” She watches me, expecting an answer. “Because I kick people’s ass for money?” A small giggle escapes her. “Mmm, maybe, but they are all so wrong.”

I hold her in my arms until she falls asleep and decide this very second that I’m going to keep her forever.
