TO RETURN REASON to the driver’s seat, I had to relegate emotion to the back. To accomplish this, I did as I was trained. I painted my grief as a big gray blanket on the canvas of my mind, heavy and coarse and damp with tears. I folded it in half and half again until it was a manageable size. Then, reverently and temporarily, I set it aside.
