Trump is a symptom as much as a cause. His appeal works because it channels the elemental force of American politics. Getting rid of him will be far easier than purging the Nation of the scourge of white fear. But as impossible as it may seem to imagine some final victory over white fear, it is still a project that we, as citizens, are compelled to pursue.
