It felt good to be protected, even if she couldn’t let herself get used to it.

I love you. Tristan pressed his lips together before the words spilled out of his mouth. Now wasn’t the time to speak them. He crossed the room in ground-eating strides to enfold her in his arms and kiss her senseless. She met him halfway.

Butterflies took wing in her stomach. When he held her like that, as if he cherished her, she could all too easily fool herself into believing he loved her. Because she loved him, and that notion terrified her. There was no future for the two of them. There was only right now.
