And it goes without saying (she said anyway) that the only way to do that is to know the ending up front, allowing you to take John Irving’s advice: “Whenever possible, tell the entire story of the novel in the first sentence.”2 For instance, here’s the opening sentence of Irving’s own A Prayer for Owen Meany:
