Luther died, excommunicated from the church he had hoped to reform. His last written words were “We are beggars. That is true.” They sum up so much of his thought: we are nothing but spiritual beggars who contribute nothing to our salvation or understanding of God; but there is, outside ourselves, God’s word of truth.
