The worst thing about secret smoking is that it reinforces the fallacy in the smoker’s mind that he is being deprived. I was five years old when World War II started. We were bombed out of our home in London and I was separated from my parents for two years. I was billeted with people who treated me unkindly. It was an unpleasant period in my life, but I was able to cope with it. I don’t believe it has left me with any permanent scars; on the contrary I think it has made me a stronger person. Abandon the ridiculous concept of smoking as being pleasurable for its own sake. If we smoked just for the sake of smoking, we could smoke herbal cigarettes (no, not that kind of herb!). The reason that herbal cigarettes haven’t taken off here or anywhere else is that there is no point in smoking them because they haven’t got any nicotine. Instead of feeling fearful and anxious about pangs, embrace them. Say to yourself: ‘I know what this is—it’s the ‘little monster’ dying.
