And that social media is not meant as a replacement for direct action and civil disobedience. And that without social media, we likely would have never heard of Trayvon Martin in the first place. Without Twitter, news of Michael Brown’s body lying in the street decaying because Officer Darren Wilson killed him and the police couldn’t be bothered to move him wouldn’t have penetrated outside of Ferguson for days, weeks, or ever.
