Perhaps my curious indifference to success will be more understandable if I explain that the driving force of my life has always been laziness; to practice this, in reasonable comfort, I have even been prepared, from time to time, to work. I think I knew instinctively that being a romantic star would demand of me, in terms of time and effort, more than I was inclined to give. I was only interested in getting to the top the easy way, and if I couldn’t get to the top the easy way, I would settle for getting some of the way the easy way.
Not to be an actor is, I think, a most laudable ambition, and one which a lot of young people might do well to acquire.
