I hope I didn’t make a big deal out of dying.
“Anyone know where we are?” “Hopefully near a bridge, so I can throw myself off of it,”
Why should this man who could wink a woman into the sack also have a personality?
“I was thinking it would have been a goddamn shame if you’d broken down one town over.”
“Oh, you did it. You brought a girl.”
Ohhh. And the crowd goes wild. Well, technically it was her loins going wild.
“I can’t believe this has just been sitting here, like…buried treasure.”
“That’s it. That’s the name.” “What?” “Buried Treasure.”
Apparently they were at the point where she would share intimate details about her life, but not the point where he could attempt to include himself among those details.
“Those women should regret not getting to know you. And you will get respect with this place. I know you will.” A sad smile passed over her lips. “You had mine before you even unlocked the door.”
“Jesus, I’m about as smooth as a pothole.”
Damn, Jasper was so glad that haunted look was gone from her eyes that he was considering going to church on Sunday to give thanks.
“Stay, Rita.” She stared at his mouth, as if the words were painted there. “What?” “Stay in Hurley, Rita. Don’t leave me.”
She sent out little pieces of her heart on the plate, and every time one passed, another piece of his own chipped away.
“Hey. Maybe I’ll wake up tomorrow and find you on the side of the road again. My own version of Groundhog Day. Maybe I’ll get a second chance to do it all over again.”
