It seems astonishing that an event like this should take place as late as 1858, but such public rituals, attended by vast crowds sometimes estimated at 20,000 people or more, and accompanied by ancient folk superstitions, the selling of food and drink, and the singing of ribald songs and ballads, were common in many parts of Europe well into the second half the nineteenth century.
