Still, between 1820 and 1914 well over five million Germans went to live in the USA; between 1820 and 1860 they constituted 31 per cent of all immigrants there, the second largest contingent after the Irish, and from 1861 to 1890, with nearly 29 per cent, the largest contingent of all.
