Not surprisingly, the illegitimate birth rate also began to fall across Europe, beginning in the 1840s, and continued to decline until the end of the century; women in other words were having less sex outside marriage as well as within it. Giving birth out of wedlock, with its consequence of social stigmatization, was frequently cited as a major reason for women being forced to engage in prostitution, which underwent a considerable expansion in the nineteenth century.
