‘The common folk of the northern provinces lived almost entirely on rye bread and grey vegetable soup,’ wrote Purlevsky. ‘Everything the peasant household produced – dairy products, beef, lamb, eggs, and so on – was sold out of necessity. People lived on peas, oats, and steamed turnips. Our village was an exception. Trade and crafts brought us money and made us richer than other villages.’
