As Scarry puts it, “The veil of ignorance fosters equality not by giving the millions of other people an imaginative weight equal to one’s own—a staggering mental labor—but by the much more efficient strategy of simply erasing for the moment one’s own dense array of attributes.” Scarry’s idea, then, is to depersonalize things, to bring everyone down rather than bringing everyone up.
