A fugitive, almost invisible smile wreathed its way across his father’s face, but he said merely:
“Not many people do, including the people who gave him a Brotherhood award last winter. But he was, about thirty years ago. I never did know why he quit, exactly: I always suspected it was because he found out he was expected to buy his own sheet.
“I’d almost forgotten poor Billy,” Skeffington said thoughtfully. “The only man who ever literally sweated away. He used to move about accompanied by drip pans and sponges to collect the excess moisture. I’ll try to avoid that fate if possible, Charlie. How’s your campaign coming along, by the way? I hear you’ve got the sound truck out.”
“Charlie, that’s unfair,” Skeffington said reproachfully. “You listened. I don’t know that I like these radical departures from fine old traditions. I only hope it doesn’t start a trend. Suppose everybody got the bug and suddenly began to listen to what was being said in political speeches? You’re playing with fire, Charlie. You may be even tampering with the health and well-being of the nation. I listened to a political speech only once in my life and I nearly died as a result. It was twenty-five years ago.
“Yes. A coronary, and a bad one.” The doctor lit a cigarette and stared out through the drawing-room window.
