“Your mother’s lying dead on the floor. You let your sister and brother live in squalor, and you’re wondering what you should do? Get. Clean.”
“Go forth, sweet maiden, and conquer your Neanderthal.”
“I wish you long-hard-cocks-and-balls-of-steel luck. Promise me you will stop overthinking and rebury the unearthed worries, because otherwise you’ll never give him a chance.”
That was precisely why she was standing on his back deck at six thirty the next morning with two to-go cups of strong coffee from Jazzy Joe’s, her favorite coffee shop. She was armed and ready to interrogate, if that’s what it took.
“Yeah.” She pushed from the doorframe. “I’ve rethought that particular adjective. I think ‘feverish’ is a better term.” She turned away and joined Kennedy in the yard.
Returning his gaze to Gemma so there was no escaping the desire or the intent in his voice, he said, “Me too, princess. I’m ravenous.”
The next text came seconds later. And you’re playing hide the sausage? Another text. Wizard of O?
Princess Swallows? Prince Cunnilingus? Hokey Pokey? Are you going to help him LET IT GO?!
She crouched beside Kennedy, feeling the heat of Truman’s gaze return. The wolf was back! Maybe she should have worn her Little Red Riding Hood outfit.
want to make you feel more than you’ve ever felt in your life,” he said in her ear, unable to look into her eyes just yet. “I want to eat you for breakfast, hold your hand and fuck you until you feel me the next day.”
“There was only you, Gemma. Your face, your tears. Your touch on my skin. I could fucking taste your mouth on mine, and you wouldn’t let that darkness in. You’re my light, Gemma. You’re everything I always thought life should be, and I know you can get any man you want, but I’m so damn happy you want me—”
What Gemma saw in Truman were all the qualities her mother could never see even if he were a suit-wearing billionaire. How could her mother recognize intense loyalty that knew no boundaries, love that came directly from the heart, and a firm grasp on doing things for the right reasons, when she didn’t possess those qualities herself?
She even talked about him illustrating children’s books that they would write together. She loved making up stories, too, and said that together their stories would have more interesting twists. What did he know about any of that? He wrote stories for his kids, but other kids might hate them.
She laughed and pressed both hands to his cheeks. “Haven’t I said it before? Gosh, Tru. I feel like I’ve been saying it for weeks. I love you. I love you more than the sun and the moon and the stars. I love you more than chocolate ice cream and fairy wings. I love you and I love the kids so much I—”
She looked at Crystal, who said, “I believe him. He’s handsy, and he’s territorial with things that aren’t his, but I believe the dude.” Bear laughed. “Sugar, you haven’t seen handsy.”
hear ya.” Bear touched Crystal’s arm. “Come on, sugar. Let’s give these guys some privacy.” “I’m not your ‘sugar,’” Crystal snapped.
“We heard there were hot babes hanging out here,” Bear answered, setting a seductive stare on Crystal, who rolled her eyes. That had become their thing. He hit on Crystal, and for whatever reason—one she wasn’t sharing with Gemma—Crystal continuously turned him away.
