Long before the word “haunting” became associated with ghosts, it meant simply “to frequent,” in the way teenage kids haunt a park or drunks haunt a bar. A house like the Merchant’s House Museum is haunted, then, by use and by habitude, by grooves worn into the floors and walls—as though you could map out the daily patterns of the people who lived here by analyzing these signs of wear.*
