‘History is not just an aggregation of events or the deeds of people. At least it should not be that way. History is about verifiable facts. If there are deeds and events, there should be evidence to support them—either documentary evidence in the form of credible historical accounts or artefacts that prove that the events took place and the people involved existed.
And it is going to be a long time before people start realising, on a large scale, that absence of evidence doesn’t mean evidence of absence.’
