But as a theory of the meaning of a certain type of sentence emotivism plainly fails for at least three very different reasons. The first is that, if the theory is to elucidate the meaning of a certain class of sentences by referring to their function, when uttered, of expressing feelings or attitudes, an essential part of the theory will have to consist in an identification and characterization of the feelings or attitudes in question.
