In TCP, a failure generally leads to retransmission rather than death, so it’s considered enough for a session to begin with what’s called a “triple handshake.” The visitor says hello, the server acknowledges the hello and says hello back, the visitor acknowledges that, and if the server receives this third message, then no further confirmation is needed and they’re off to the races.
