Relaxations offer us a number of advantages. For one, they offer a bound on the quality of the true solution. If we’re trying to pack our calendar, imagining that we can magically teleport across town will instantaneously make it clear that eight one-hour meetings is the most we could possibly expect to fit into a day; such a bound might be useful in setting expectations before we face the full problem.
