Opponents of false memory research often claim that we are silencing victims and defending the guilty. There is, of course, a legitimate concern here – it would be an awful thing for someone who has had any kind of traumatic experience to be disbelieved. But given that there is empirical evidence that false memories do exist – and can be created – any conception of justice must surely also be concerned with trying to protect the innocent from false conviction.
