In particular, love relationships are important, and therefore the advice of emotional detachment may actually undermine happiness.8 Philosopher Alain de Botton agrees that loving relationships are fundamental to happiness. Indeed, he thinks our quest for the external goods of status and money is really just another quest for love.9
