Maurice hated Gates. He disliked the whole character of Dr. Crusher and he wanted to get rid of Gates and replace her. He didn’t like her acting and he didn’t like her. He went to me at the end of season one, and I said I thought it was a bad idea. Then he went to Gene and he managed to convince Gene. It was all part of the fact that he was the last man standing at the end of the first season and he was going to be moving into the second-biggest chair over in the writing area next to Gene. There were a lot of fans who didn’t like the fact that Gates had been let go. The reason that was told to the public was one of those kind of classy, she’s going off to pursue other endeavors. At the end of the second season, Hurley had left the show and I didn’t feel that Muldaur was working out at all. So the question was—do I pick a third doctor? Do we have three doctors in three seasons? Or do I bring Gates back? I decided it would be healthier for everybody involved to bring Gates back; which we did, and she remained our Dr. Crusher. TERRY FARRELL People are always going on and on about what a family the Next Gen cast is and how we weren’t. Here’s my side: I think Next Generation are the popular kids in high school. They’re totally a clique. They’re all dancing to the same song; we’re each dancing to our own different songs, but we still come together. I’m not trying to say it’s deeper than what Next Gen has.
