When polled in May 1946, nearly seven out of ten white Americans surveyed believed that “Negroes in the United States are being treated fairly.”1 Yes, you read that right: in the midst of Jim Crow segregation, the terror of the KKK, the open torment and intimidation by the White Citizens’ Council, and the regular violence against black people in America, who had no protection or judicial recourse, most white Americans did not think there was a racial problem. Yes, these numbers included Christians too.
