Knitting was the closest I came to devotional practice. The rhythmic stitches helped ease me into a nearly meditative state, loosening the noose of stress while helping me believe I could survive anything, that I connected in some profound way to all things great and small. How could I ever explain knitting as a spiritual experience to the uninitiated? Yet, it was in some profound way.
