Simon thought he must dazzle his enemies with his magical prowess, but also his glitter.
They all seemed to be related to each other and it was very disturbing.
Simon thought being trained could not possibly be as bad as being prepared to be trained, but as it turned out it was much worse.
Simon did not remember a life before soup, and he despaired of ever achieving a life after soup.
“I don’t remember hell all that well,” Simon said. “But I think I recall it was nicer than this.”
Not remembering something might not mean it never happened, but sometimes pretending that made things easier.
“You realize you all sound like you’re in some kind of cult,”
“I don’t like snakes. Snakes don’t need keys.”
“There is no fun here,” Simon said. “This is not Fun Academy. I should know. I was in a band once called Fun Academy.”
You never know when, and you never know who, but someday a stranger will burst through the door of your life and transform it utterly.
He did not know why books had not taught him how to talk so other people wanted to listen.
You love, and tremble, and burn. Do not let any of them tell you who you are. You are the flame that cannot be put out. You are the star that cannot be lost. You are who you have always been, and that is enough and more than enough. Anyone who looks at you and sees darkness is blind.
“You cannot simply ask whether people look like their demon grandfather!”
“I believe she may be planning to strangle you and then bake you a cake afterward.” “I like cake,” James said at last.
“Uh,” said Simon. “Sorry, is the message I’m meant to be learning ‘get out, get out as fast as you can’?”
History, the way teachers liked it, was a racetrack, a straight shot from start to finish line; life itself was more of a maze.
You will be tempted to think this ordeal marks you as weak. Instead, remember it as proof of your strength.
“Love, real love, is being seen. Being known. Knowing the ugliest part of someone, and loving them anyway. And . . . I guess I think two people in love become something else, something more than the sum of their parts, you know? That it must be like you’re creating a new world that exists just for the two of you. You’re gods of your own pocket universe.”
There was no heat, but each had been provided with a heavy fur blanket. As a vegetarian, Simon didn’t really want to use it. As a person without much choice who was freezing, he did.
Y DO U SAY THINGS R XTINCT WHEN THINGS R NOT XTINCT and Y R U THE WAY THAT U R.
Magnus had, for several moments, believed that the only possible explanation was that the whole family was drunk. Now he was coming to a much worse conclusion.
He was not certain where to start. He had imagined Robert Lightwood knew how babies were made.
Ragnor had been yelling at kids to get off his lawn before lawns were invented.
“We all change the world, with every day of living in it,” Magnus said. “You just have to decide how you want to change the world.
Magnus kept misplacing his baby. This did not seem a good sign for the future. Magnus was sure you were meant to keep a firm grip on their location.
What could possibly make you think I have any standards left when it comes to you?”
