I comprehended for the first time in my entire life that God did not exist to rescue us from our difficulties and trials on earth.
Christianity was not about a series of miraculous escapes from affliction, disease and poverty. It was not about being protected from the turnoff into the valley of tribulation. God’s power has never and was not displayed in the elimination of suffering from mankind.
It took an ordeal like this for Pierre and me to see how tangled up we had become in worthy, yet worldly, passing goals.
