Bombay had started out as seven islands separated by mosquito-infested swamps. The area was originally part of Ashoka’s Mauryan Empire but in 1343, the islands were conquered by the Sultan of Gujarat. Two hundred years later, the Portuguese seized the islands and set up a trading centre there. They called the area Bom Bahia—meaning ‘the good bay’.
