“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” Epictetus
Stoicism concerns itself with what it means to lead a good, moral, and productive life.
There is no value in worrying, being anxious, or wasting energy thinking about all the things we cannot influence. It does not serve you. We can’t control whether someone else is wealthier, prettier, or happier than we are. But we can control how we act and, crucially, how we choose to spend our days.
The formula for the Perfect Day is built on the Three Cs: Control, Conquer, and Concentrate.
“Discipline and freedom are not mutually exclusive but mutually dependent because otherwise, you’d sink into chaos.” Paulo Coelho
The right rituals and routines make the right actions automatic, no matter how chaotic things get.
Do the first things first.
Get up and give your number one priority the focus it deserves for at least fifteen minutes every morning.
Your morning victories start with preparing properly the night before. You must have a plan in place to take action the next morning. The earlier you rise, the fewer opposing forces to your self-control, and the more momentum you’ll have to overcome the inertia of procrastination.
That’s why you must start early and control your morning, so that (barring external emergencies) your day will go exactly as planned.
Investors know that patience, discipline, a structured approach, rules for finding specific investments, and an organized plan for investing are all key elements of a successful portfolio.
Nothing comes easy at first but anything important is worth fighting for.
You must be willing to match your level of desire with the same level of action and commitment to success.
Commit to your rule. Believe in it. Follow the rule as if it were law. Uphold it as if breaking it would put you in jail.
having your rules is the secret to winning your mornings.
Your rules are an essential part of success. Use your rules for living as a clear set of personal philosophies that will make your daily decisions easier. With your rules, you will own your days, achieve your big goals, and leave a lasting legacy.
Правила должны делать выбор легче. Но правильные правила должны основываться на правильных ценностях.
your personal rules clearly and concisely outline acceptable behaviors for your life. Your rules state what you will and will not do. Your rules automatically dictate that you make the right decisions, making it easy to overcome obstacles and resist temptation. Your rules replace your reliance on willpower to get you through challenges. Your rules guide you to greater productivity and guilt-free behavior that is congruent with, and supportive of, your goals.
We make better decisions when we have strong personal philosophies in place that guide us.
“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
Scripting your day also allows your subconscious mind to work at night for you while you sleep.
Research shows that checking email delivers the same powerful dopamine response as sugar or drugs.
On Sundays, I do not use the Internet or my mobile phone at all.
