But don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t do something. You can do whatever you put your mind to . . . as long as you’re willing to pay for it with every ounce of sweat you’ve got. Even then the success you find might not look like the success you imagined. But what the hell. Go for it.

One of the only success stories to come out of Hefe’s Nightclub was the weekly gay dance night. One of the local radio DJs was gay so he helped promote it, and I went to the campus of the nearby College of the Redwoods and told their Gay Straight Alliance about it. In a small town like Eureka there aren’t a lot of options for gay nightlife, so people took notice. The local news even came down to do a report about it. Fat Mike joked a few times: “So Hefe, it was your dream to open a gay nightclub?” But I’m loud and proud about it. It wasn’t just some dance night—it was a safe haven for a lot of people who were otherwise surrounded by Redneck Country. People would pull me aside at the club and say with deep sincerity, “Thank you for doing this for us.”
