A few days later, the Sydney Morning Herald pointed out that it was an offence, under a law enacted in 1900, to ‘administer or cause or allow to be received any oath’ unless the person’s profession had been approved by parliament. Journalists weren’t covered. The maximum penalty was two years’ jail.
