She didn’t know many poems—stealing didn’t lend itself to literary study—but she knew Blake by heart, thanks to her mother.
Kell would say it was impossible. What a useless word, in a world with magic.
Were they really one of a kind, or two?
Where is our son? the queen had demanded, as if she had only one.
Kell used to feel like a possession. Now he felt like a prisoner.
Nature is made of cycles, and we are made of nature. What is unnatural is believing in an infallible man and a nice place waiting in the sky.”
Lila wondered for perhaps the hundredth time which version of Alucard was the real one, or if, somehow, they were all real, each in its own way.
“Politics is a dance until the moment it becomes a war. And we control the music.”
“Strength and weakness are tangled things,” the Aven Essen had said. “They look so much alike, we often confuse them, the way we confuse magic and power.”
He didn’t fit in with the clashes of color, the laughter and jostle and sparkle of magic. He was too understated. This was a place for performers. And that suited Lila just fine.
People either stole to stay alive or to feel alive. She had to imagine that they ran away for the same reasons.
“Saints, no, that word has no place except in bed. And Lord makes my skin crawl. Captain will do.” He gestured at the waiting men. “Shall we?”
Lila had never really bought into fate, but like most people who disavowed religion, she could summon a measure of belief when it was necessary.
“Saints, you’re seeing her in everyone and everything now, Kell? There’s a word for that.” “Hallucination?” “Infatuation.”
“Everyone thinks I have a death wish, you know? But I don’t want to die—dying is easy. No, I want to live, but getting close to death is the only way to feel alive. And once you do, it makes you realize that everything you were doing before wasn’t actually living. It was just making do. Call me crazy, but I think we do the best living when the stakes are high.”
“What are you doing here?” asked Rhy. “Looking for you,” said Alucard at the same time Lila asked, “Have you seen Kell?” Alucard raised a brow. “We make a point of avoiding each other.”
