most commonly prescribed sedatives for insomnia are known as the “Z-drugs”: zolpidem (Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta), and zaleplon (Sonata). Z-drugs are distant cousins of benzodiazepines (like the antianxiety medications clonazepam or lorazepam).
