The critique was accurate in highlighting how the SCLC’s mass mobilizations were generally short-lived and produced messy fallout for local organizations. However, as Project C showed, these public confrontations were also extraordinarily powerful, drawing national attention to the issue of racial prejudice, creating some of the movement’s most memorable images, and forcefully pushing forward federal legislation.
