If the state government were to endorse slavery, thus opening northeastern Mexico to an exodus of disgruntled American farmers looking for a new place to grow cotton for export to England, Austin promised that “in a very few years the State of Coahuila and Texas will have more wealth and trade than any other state in the entire Mexican federation.”
