Anybody can be compliant for a certain period of time. In fact, drug addicts and alcoholics are masters at wearing masks and people-pleasing. But to be in a state of surrender takes humility, not a common trait for people of my kind. We get into trouble, swear to God we’ll never do it again, pray for help, and make what seem like iron-clad resolutions to our innermost selves and the rest of the world. And then the ego kicks in with its incredible ability to bypass experience and we are, yet again, drunk and high. Because deep down we never really wanted to change in the first place. I
