when it is in our power to look after one thing, and to attach ourselves to it, we prefer to look after many things, and to be bound to many things, to the body and to property, and to brother and to friend, and to child and to slave. Since, then, we are bound to many things, we are depressed by them and dragged down.
We are saddened because we set our mind on too many things, all of which are not in our control. It is of no surprise that you don't necessarily get what was never yours, or that you may lose it once you acquire it. For you attach yourself to too many things, you are inclined to feel powerless. Why not, then, recognize what it truly yours and worship it as your god? I am talking about rationality, of course.
