from my own knowledge I can say that the General was accurate in his assessment of what the IRA was paying its members as of June 1978 – £20 a week. He said: We estimate that some 250 people would draw this and perhaps 60 would get , £40 per week… Apart from arms expenditure the Provisionals have to bear the cost of their prison welfare work including payment to prisoners’ dependants, travel and transport costs and propaganda expenses, especially the Republican newspapers whose sale does not cover their cost.
