An eight-year-old girl from Lighthouse watched as her father facilitated Discovery Bible Studies. She announced, “I can do this!” She lived in a rough part of Cape Town known for its gangs, so she began working with the children at the local park. Two years later she was still making disciples. She attends the Lighthouse leaders’ gathering and sometimes brings her disciples with her.

God often uses movement pioneers from outside the church as change agents. Their job is to (1) feed discontent with the status quo, (2) cast a vision of what God could do, and ( 3) provide simple but profound methods to get people started and help them remain on track.

As Amid read the Qur’an he discovered that it elevated Isa above Muhammad. He learned that the Qur’an gave Isa twenty-three titles of honor, yet none for Muhammad. Isa is with Allah in heaven, Muhammad is not with Allah now. Isa will return; Muhammad will not. Isa is alive; Muhammad is dead. The Qur’an speaks of Isa ninety-seven times, only four times does it mention Muhammad. Isa’s name means Savior; Muhammad is not a savior. Isa is called Ruhullah, the Spirit of Allah. Muhammad is only a messenger.

Isa is holy. The Qur’an describes Isa as the word of Allah (God), the Ruhullah (Spirit of God) and the Messiah whose name means “Savior.” He is righteous and born of a virgin. Isa is powerful. He gave sight to the blind, healed lepers and raised the dead. It is a Muslim’s duty to Allah to obey Isa. To know what Isa commands us to do, we must read the Injil. Isa knows the way to heaven. Allah raised Isa to himself. Isa is in heaven and knows the way to heaven. Those who follow Isa are above those who disbelieve.7

What characterizes Basir? Those close to him would say a willingness to die for his faith. He is both humble and determined. Despite his achievements he remains willing to learn from outside mentors. He has no desire for the limelight or the trappings of leadership. He develops strong leaders who follow his example of servanthood. He leads by influence, not by control.

Paul learned to delight in his weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. The outcome was that Christ’s power rested on him. “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (v. 10).

For Paul the gospel was God’s power revealed through the resurrection of Christ and evidenced through the presence of the Spirit.6 He expected his ministry to be marked by the powerful presence and visible manifestations of the Spirit. The churches that he founded were characterized by concrete and visible manifestations of God’s power through the Holy Spirit. Paul could not have imagined conducting his ministry or living the Christian life without dependence on the reality of the power of God. New Testament believers experienced the Spirit in powerful and visible ways.7
