Reynolds tells me that post-rock was coined to describe the “open-ended space of possibility”, where artists were spilling beyond the boundaries of rock in many different directions. There was an excitement around this 90s post-rock because it did not erect barricades around how instruments should be utilised. There were no checkboxes for post-rock to tick.
