“Art is not just for beauty but to make our knowledge speak. Art is a defence and an action. Art is a woman.”
The embodiment of stories from my immediate elder generations, from my ancestors and from ancestral lands is what connects me through time and space to that intangible, temporal, performative medium we call theatre.
“Art is a defence.” I art in defence of women’s bodies. “Art is an action.” I art to make our knowledge speak. I art for that little brown girl asking, “Why war?” Over and over again…
“My people will sleep for one hundred years, but when they awake, it will be the artists who give them their spirit back.”
Me artsy? No, not really. I am just breathing the healing air my grandmother shared with me. In my painting, I am sharing that air and that healing with the world I am in, and with the world I want to share with tomorrow’s children.
What memories are stored in my tissues, blood, marrow and organs? What are the ways of knowing that reside in my body? How is and how can story be embodied and released out?
As in life, being open and vulnerable, exposing pain, delving into the darkness of the soul and unlocking the gateways to love and light takes courage. How fearless can I be?
