The calculation behind these sacrifices is both rational and practical: we believe, correctly, that higher education is the single most important gateway to opportunity in our society. We are willing to do just about anything to obtain a diploma because we expect that it will give us or our children the best possible chance for a good job, a good income, a good neighborhood, a good life.
