Modern backpacks employ a design that relies on a wide padded hip belt. The majority of the pack’s weight is supported by the belt, and as a result the legs bear most of the burden, not the back or shoulders. Shoulder straps are there only to keep the pack’s center of gravity close to your own and to stabilize the load.
