And for obvious reasons a politician who stands up and says, “Sorry, you can’t have a pension, we just can’t afford it any more,” has a much shorter life span than one who says, “We are taking positive steps to solve the financial crisis with a £100 billion package of quantitative easing (QE).” Both statements have essentially the same result but only a small minority of people understand this.
