the “counterfactual.” It is all the things that could have happened but which in everyday experience we never observe because we did something else. We don’t observe what would have happened if we had not gotten married. Or see what would have happened if we had taken a different job. We can speculate on what would have happened, and we can make decent guesses. But we don’t really know.
