Lucifer’s downfall was his pride. God says through Ezekiel the prophet, “You were anointed as a guardian cherub [high-ranking angel], for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God. . . . You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. . . . Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth” (Ezekiel 28:14–17). When Lucifer fell, he persuaded a third of Heaven’s angels to follow him (Revelation 12:3–7). He wanted to be God, and as Ezekiel 28 indicates,
